About this business
About the business
At Flameless Cremation, we believe saying goodbye to someone you love should be handled with dignity, compassion, and respect for both the family and the environment.
We are Illinois’ original dedicated flameless cremation provider, specializing in alkaline hydrolysis, also known as water cremation. We have spent more than a decade helping families and funeral homes understand this alternative to traditional flame cremation and providing a gentle, meaningful option for final disposition.
What makes Flameless Cremation different is that we are not a large corporate crematory. We are a small, independently owned business where personal attention matters. When your loved one comes into our care, they are treated as family—not a number. We take great pride in carefully handling every individual and maintaining the highest standards of care, dignity, and identification throughout the process.
We also believe families deserve to understand their choices. Flameless cremation is still relatively new to many people, and we are happy to explain exactly how the process works, answer questions honestly, and help families make the decision that feels right for them. There is never any pressure or judgment.
We offer a variety of options for the return and memorialization of cremated remains, including environmentally conscious choices for families who want their loved one's final disposition to reflect their values.
Most importantly, we understand that this isn't simply a service—it is someone's husband, wife, mother, father, child, grandparent, or friend. We never lose sight of that.
Our goal is simple: to provide families with a compassionate, professional, environmentally responsible alternative while treating every person entrusted to our care as if they were a member of our own family.
If you have questions about flameless cremation, we are always honored to talk with you. Sometimes the first step is simply having someone take the time to explain your options.
Origin story
I founded this business while experiencing burnout, after reading an article about Mayo Clinic using this process. I then worked with legislators over several years to get it legalized in Illinois, and opened the first water crematory in the state.

Common questions
What is flameless cremation?
Flameless cremation uses water instead of fire and is an alternative to burial or flame cremation. The scientific name for flameless cremation is alkaline hydrolysis, which is essentially an accelerated form of natural breakdown. A combination of gentle water flow, temperature, and alkalinity is used to accelerate the natural course of breakdown accomplished by our ecosystem at the end of life.
Do I get the cremated remains back?
Yes. As with flame cremation, the cremated remains are returned to the family. Families may keep them in an urn, entomb them, bury them in a cemetery, or scatter them in a special place, as some families choose to do.
Is it safe for the environment?
Yes. The process is about 95% water and 5% alkali. The alkalis used are found in common cosmetic products, body washes, shaving creams, and many household products. The sterile process releases no harmful emissions or air pollutants and neutralizes embalming fluids and pathogens, protecting the earth’s water, soil, and air from pollution.
Is Flameless Cremation licensed?
Yes. Our directors are Illinois-licensed funeral directors, and Flameless Cremation is licensed by the Illinois Office of the Comptroller.
Why is flameless cremation better than flame cremation?
When compared to flame cremation, flameless cremation uses less energy and releases no smoke, mercury emissions, or particulate matter into the atmosphere. The process is a gentle, flameless alternative to traditional cremation.
